Worship & Prayer

'Rooted and grounded in love’

Prayer and worship are at the centre of our life.

Like many other communities OHP follows the Benedictine tradition in a balanced daily life of prayer, work and common life.

Wherever the Sisters live and whatever ministry they are engaged in, a regular pattern of monastic worship and personal prayer is observed.

Daily routine involves:

  • Rise at 06.00
  • Private meditation
  • Morning Prayer 07.30
  • Eucharist 08.00
  • Midday Office 12.40
  • Evening Prayer 18.00
  • Compline 19.45

Although our Chapel is a private chapel, we welcome guests who are staying at the Priory, at the Sneaton Castle Centre, or in Whitby, to join us for the Offices and for the daily Eucharist. We ask that groups who are staying in the Sneaton Castle Centre contact us in advance if they wish to use Chapel for their own needs to discuss availability.

There is a notice displayed by the main door and in Chapel stating the times of the services.  On Sundays, our Eucharist is at 09.30 and we welcome the Priory congregation, which is made up of local residents, many of whom are associated with OHP through having worked with the Order in one of the schools or in local enterprise.

In addition to the timetable above, each Sister does regular Bible reading and spiritual reading. Silence plays and important part in our life.

We have times for personal and community retreats.

We receive many requests for prayer and intercession. If you wish to contact us with such a request you may do so in writing or by email.
